Paddle UK - Strategy 2026+ NI Consultation Session

Help Shape the Future of Paddling

Paddle UK is currently developing its new UK‑wide strategy, and as a National Association, Paddle NI is supporting this process by hosting an in‑person engagement session for the Northern Ireland paddling community.

This session will be led by Ashley Metcalfe, CEO of Paddle UK, and Ashley Hunter, Paddle UK Board Member representing Northern Ireland, with members of the Paddle NI Board also in attendance. This is an important opportunity for clubs, members, volunteers and delivery partners to contribute directly to the shaping of the next Paddle UK strategy.

Paddle UK is keen to hear from everyone involved in paddling from clubs, coaches and centres to recreational paddlers and those who may return to the sport in future. At the heart of this engagement is a simple question: what should Paddle UK focus on to best support paddlers and the places we paddle?

The session will give you the opportunity to:

  • Hear from Paddle UK about the development of the new strategy
  • Share NI‑specific priorities, challenges and opportunities
  • Ensure the voices of our clubs, athletes, coaches, centres and volunteers are clearly represented
  • Influence the direction of paddlesport across the UK for the years ahead

As a National Association, it is essential that we bring forward a strong and representative NI voice and your participation is key to that.

Paddle NI’s Participation and Development Officer, Mark, travelled to Iceland after being invited to coach at the Iceland Sea Kayak Symposium, an event that brings together sea kayakers and coaches from across the world. The invitation reflects Mark’s growing expertise and the work he does to support paddlers and clubs here in Northern Ireland. Sea kayaking continues to be one of the most popular areas within our progressive paddles programme and opportunities like this help us keep our development work aligned with the highest coaching standards. The symposium focuses on sharing best practice, developing coaching approaches, and building the skills needed for safe paddling in moderate and advanced water environments, all of which directly supports our club work, leadership development and participation programmes. Paddle NI Head of Operations Rodger Hamilton said, “We encouraged and supported Mark to attend because staying up‑to‑date with the latest coaching methods and technical skills directly benefits the paddlers and volunteers he works with throughout the year. He has returned with new ideas, fresh perspectives and useful learning from working alongside international coaches”. We’re proud to see Northern Ireland represented at an event like this and delighted that Mark has come back with knowledge and connections that will strengthen our local programmes and the wider paddlesport community. Our next series of progressive paddles will run from September, keep an eye on social media channels for details.
