Help Track Water Quality Issues in Northern Ireland
The Clean Water Sports Alliance NI has launched a public reporting survey to capture when and where poor water quality is impacting those enjoying a range of water sports across Northern Ireland.
The Alliance is supported by the NI Sports Forum and is currently made up of seven National Governing Bodies for water-based sport: Swim Ulster, Paddle NI, Rowing Ireland (NI Branch), RYA Northern Ireland, Ulster Angling Federation, National Coarse Fishing Federation Ireland and Triathlon Ireland. Collectively, they represent more than 22,000 club members and an estimated 300,000 participants.
The survey invites both club members and informal watersport users to report any incidents, including any abandoned sessions, health concerns or disrupted activity linked to water quality. These responses will help build an evidence base to inform dialogue with decision makers and support practical steps that keep people safe while protecting the places they enjoy.
Richard Honeyford, Executive Manager of the Northern Ireland Sports Forum, speaking on behalf of the Clean Water Sports Alliance NI, said: “For those who enjoy our waters, from club training, taking part in events, family paddles and casual swims, clean and safe conditions are vital. By taking a few minutes to record your experiences, you will help us build a clear picture of where problems occur and how they impact local communities. The stronger the evidence, the better we can work with partners to secure improvements. We encourage everyone who uses our rivers, loughs and coasts to take part.”
