Although insurance does not cover remote supervision, it is recognised that such supervision is essential for programs such as Duke of Edinburgh expeditions and outdoor educational initiatives. It enables groups to become self-sufficient, completing paddling journeys without external assistance, particularly during qualifying and practice expeditions.

Remote supervision is a progressive educational process where direct oversight is gradually withdrawn to allow a group to undertake an independent paddle journey while the supervisor maintains their duty of care.

This involves:

• Supervisors adhering to a standard of reasonable care to protect participants as far as is “reasonably practicable”, especially with young people or novices.
• Supervisors know the group’s location at all times and are able to predict their likely actions.
• Use of checklists, pre-trip risk assessments for local hazards, and journey logbooks to monitor conditions and morale.
