Single craft pathways for Paddlesport Leader and Paddlesport Touring Leader

British Canoeing Awarding Body is pleased to share that we will be introducing single craft pathways for the Paddlesport Leader and Paddlesport Touring Leader from 1st May 2025.

This exciting development allows aspiring leaders to specialise in canoe, kayak, stand up paddleboard (SUP), or opt for the existing multi-craft pathway.

We are introducing this change based on feedback from the paddling community, addressing the growing demand from individuals and organisations who usually operate within a single discipline. This therefore allows a more relevant and tailored learning experience, offers choice and ultimately enhances safety and leadership quality within the paddling community.

This change is aimed at supporting voluntary groups and commercial operators who primarily offer kayak or canoe activities, providing a focused leadership award for touring environments without the need for multi-craft rescue demonstrations. The existing multi-craft option will remain available to accommodate clubs and centres offering diverse activities.

Lee Pooley, Director of Recreation and Development

Existing Paddlesport Leaders and Paddlesport Touring Leaders do not need to do anything further. This award aligns with the multi-craft option that will be available.

Help Track Water Quality Issues in Northern Ireland
by Lyn Sherriff 22 August 2025
What is the Clean Water Sports Alliance NI Seven of Northern Ireland’s water-based National Governing Bodies have joined forces to tackle the growing issue of polluted waterways. The Clean Water Sports Alliance NI brings together Swim Ulster, Paddle NI, Rowing Ireland NI Branch, the Royal Yachting Association Northern Ireland, the Ulster Angling Federation, the National Coarse Fishing Federation Ireland (NCFFI), and Triathlon Ireland. Supported by the NI Sports Forum, this alliance sends a clear message: preserving clean rivers, lakes, and coastal waters is essential for sport, recreation, and community wellbeing. Why Clean Water Matters for Paddlers Polluted water doesn’t just harm wildlife and habitats—it directly impacts us on the water: It jeopardises the health of paddlers by increasing exposure to bacteria and contaminants. It disrupts clubs, coaching, training courses, and qualification pathways when sites become unusable. It undermines the safety and enjoyment of paddles, from beginner session, to club activity and performance athletes. By uniting behind the Clean Water Sports Alliance NI, paddlers and clubs can help shape stronger water-quality policies and secure the future of our sport.
